I was really surprised because I was totally sure that “cash rules the roost”. In reality, as Fred pointed out, if you're over 18 and possess fewer than 20 grams of cannabis or 10 grams of hashish and refrain from public consumption, you shouldn't anticipate any legal trouble. At most, law enforcement may seize your belongings once they confirm you're not involved in distribution.

Typically, law enforcement officers do not interfere with foreign tourists who are enjoying their vacation or conducting business trips in Dakar and contributing to the economy of Senegal.

Local attitude towards weed and cannabis in Dakar

Although only medical cannabis is allowed in Dakar, the locals are absolutely ok with the smokers. Local dealers have big cash from the students and tourists, so they are their weed target audiences in Dakar. One more interesting fact from my new friend Fred - even some cops in Dakar prefer smoking weed over drinking strong. So as I understood Dakar is a good place for smokers of marijuana because of the light atmosphere, but all the same the best rule is not to be caught with weed in Dakar 😉.

Generally, the local stance on cannabis is quite laid-back, so you might start feeling at ease in Dakar after enjoying a single quality joint, and I can attest to this from my own experience. Fred graciously shared a wonderfully satisfying sativa joint with me, even though he wasn't sure about the specific strain. We were indulging outside a bar and noticed other individuals across the street doing the same 😁. It's safe to say that cannabis consumption is quite prevalent in Dakar.

I inquired with Fred about the possibility of obtaining his dealer's contact information because the quality of the product was exceptional. He explained that his specific dealer doesn't take on new clients, so he graciously offered to be my supplier during my vacation, which turned out to be an ideal arrangement. Based on what I observed, super high-quality weed can cost between $20 to $25 per gram (with discounts for larger quantities), and high-quality hash typically ranges from $30 to $35 per gram. I haven't purchased low-quality weed in Dakar, so I'm not sure about the prices for that, but they should generally be lower.
